How to Hire a DevOps Engineer in 2026
DevOps/SRE is consistently the hardest engineering role to fill. The demand outstrips supply by 3:1 globally. Here is how to actually find and hire great DevOps engineers.
What to Look For
The title “DevOps Engineer” means different things at different companies. Be specific about what you need:
Platform Engineer
Internal developer platforms, CI/CD pipelines, developer experience. Tools: Kubernetes, Terraform, ArgoCD.
SRE (Site Reliability)
Uptime, incident response, SLOs. On-call rotations. Tools: Prometheus, Grafana, PagerDuty.
Cloud Infrastructure
AWS/GCP/Azure architecture, cost optimization, security. Infrastructure-as-code.
DevSecOps
Security scanning, compliance automation, supply chain security. SAST/DAST, Vault, OPA.

- Cross-border sourcing. A senior DevOps engineer in Istanbul at EUR 40K is doing the same work as one in Munich at EUR 90K. Same Kubernetes, same Terraform, same AWS.
- Specialized recruiters. Generic recruiters don't understand the difference between a sysadmin and an SRE. Use specialists.
Interview Tips
- Ask about real incidents they resolved, not textbook Kubernetes questions.
- Discuss their approach to infrastructure-as-code — not just tools, but philosophy.
- Test their ability to communicate during a crisis. DevOps is as much about communication as it is about tech.
- Check if they understand cost. Cloud bills are engineering decisions.
