Hiring a Developer Advocate: Role, Salary & What to Look For

Developer Relations is no longer optional for developer-facing products. But what does a DevRel person actually DO, and how do you hire one that drives results?

What Developer Advocates Actually Do

  • Write technical content (blog posts, tutorials, docs)
  • Speak at conferences and meetups
  • Build sample apps and SDKs
  • Engage with the developer community (Twitter/X, Discord, GitHub)
  • Provide feedback from developers to product team
  • Create video tutorials and livestreams

The Ideal Candidate Profile

The best DevRel hires are engineers who discovered they love teaching more than building. They should be able to code, write, and present — but you do not need a 10x engineer. You need someone who makes OTHER developers 10x better at using your product.

Must-have

  • Can write production-quality code
  • Strong written communication
  • Active in developer communities
  • Comfortable presenting to crowds

Red flags

  • Pure marketer who cannot code
  • Pure engineer who hates writing
  • No public presence (blog, talks, GitHub)
  • Expects to only do conference travel
